The Thomas Karsten Building is the original Sonobudoyo Museum Unit I structure, designed by Dutch architect Thomas Karsten. The Joglo Mangkurat architecture blends classical Javanese style with modern elements. It features a traditional Javanese layout (regol, pendapa, pringgitan, dalem). It is now a permanent exhibition space showcasing collections from Javanese culture, prehistory, and Hindu-Buddhist influences. It has undergone a recent, more modern and thematic renovation.
