Sonobudoyo State Museum is a Regional Technical Implementation Unit at the Yogyakarta Special Region Provincial Cultural Office, which has the function of managing museum objects that have scientific cultural value, including development collections and cultural educational guidance. Meanwhile, his duties are collecting, caring for, preserving, carrying out research, library services, cultural educational guidance and presenting collections of the Sonobudoyo State Museum.
 
Sonobudoyo Museum, which is located in the city center, is in a strategic location, within the Yogyakarta Cultural Center which has received a lot of attention from various parties, both domestic and foreign.
 
The Sonobudoyo Museum building is a joglo house with the architecture of the Cirebon tenth palace mosque. Designed by Ir. Th. Karsten.
 
The existence of the museum is closely related to a foundation during the Colonial Java Institute in the fields of Javanese, Madurese, Balinese and Lombok culture as the originator of the Sonobudoyo Museum, which was inaugurated on November 6, 1935, by Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono VIII marked by Candrasengkala "Kayu Winayang Ing Brahmana Budha. ".
 
Sonobudoyo Museum as a provincial museum in the future is expected to be a description of the function of the museum in terms of service and function optimization, by looking at its potential, so that it will have prospects and opportunities to be further developed and improved, in order to face competition both at the national and international levels.
