Javanese script is one of the cultural heritages of the archipelago that is full of meaning and history. In addition to being used to write in Javanese, this script also has a deep story about its origins. One of the popular stories in society is the legend of Aji Saka. This story not only involves legendary figures, but also contains valuable life philosophies. Legend of Aji Saka The legend of Aji Saka begins with a young man named Aji Saka, who according to the story came from India. Together with his two servants, Dora and Sembada, he wandered to various countries, expanding his knowledge and experience. Their long journey took them to the archipelago, which is said to be a fertile area rich in natural beauty. On Majeti Island, where they first landed, Aji Saka decided to leave one of his servants, Sembada, to guard his heirloom keris. The message was clear: the item could only be given to Aji Saka himself. Next, Aji Saka and Dora continued their journey to Java. Upon arriving in Java, they found a kingdom ruled by Prabu Dewata Cengkar, a tyrannical king who loved to eat human flesh. Aji Saka challenged the king with a unique condition: he asked for land as wide as the turban he wore. The king agreed without realizing the magical power of the turban, which could stretch to the South Coast. As a result, Prabu Dewata Cengkar fell into the sea and turned into a white crocodile. After successfully defeating the tyrannical king, Aji Saka became king in Medangkamulan, replacing Dewata Cengkar. The Tragedy That Gave Birth to the Javanese Script As king, Aji Saka asked Dora to return to Majeti Island and retrieve the heirloom keris entrusted to Sembada. However, Sembada refused to hand over the keris, still obeying Aji Saka's initial mandate. As a result, a fierce battle broke out between Dora and Sembada. Both were equally powerful, but neither retreated until they were both killed. When Aji Saka heard the news of their deaths, he was very sorry. As a tribute to the sacrifice of Dora and Sembada, Aji Saka created the Javanese script. Philosophical Meaning of the Javanese ScriptThe Javanese script is not just letters, but also holds stories and deep meanings. This is the sound of the Javanese script created by Aji Saka:Ha Na Ca Ra Ka: Ana duta (There is a messenger).Da Ta Sa Wa La: Padha kekerengan (They are at odds).Pa Dha Ja Ya Nya: Padha didhayane (Both are powerful).Ma Ga Ba Tha Nga: Padha dadi bathange (Both become corpses). Each line in this script reflects the life journey of Dora and Sembada, which depicts loyalty, sacrifice, and trust.Javanese Script and Hindu-Buddhist CivilizationThe legend of Aji Saka also reflects the entry of Hindu-Buddhist teachings into Java. In a historical context, the Javanese script was inspired by the Pallawa script which originated from India. The arrival of Aji Saka is often associated with the arrival of civilization and Dharma values ??to the archipelago. This script was not only used for writing, but also became a symbol of cultural identity and an important means of communication at that time. In various ancient inscriptions, Javanese script is used to record important events, laws, and religious teachings. Preserving Javanese Script in the Modern Era In modern times, Javanese script faces major challenges. The use of this script is increasingly rare, especially among the younger generation. However, various efforts have been made to preserve it, such as teaching in schools, developing digital applications, and recording important documents using Javanese script. In this way, it is hoped that this rich cultural heritage will remain alive and known to future generations.
